June 14, 2026, Lumbini: A dog that gained international attention for accompanying a group of Buddhist monks on a remarkable 3,700-kilometer peace walk across the United States has arrived in Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha.

The dog, which faithfully followed the footsteps of Vietnamese monk Pannakara, reached Nepal on Sunday as part of a delegation led by the monk. The animal became a symbol of dedication and companionship during the “Walk for Peace” campaign, a 108-day journey covering approximately 3,700 kilometers on foot.

Led by Venerable Pannakara, a team of 18 monks and lay followers traveled to Lumbini to promote the message of peace inspired by the teachings of the Buddha. A special welcome ceremony was organized at the Maya Devi Temple, where the visitors offered prayers and reflected on the significance of their journey. Speaking at the event, Venerable Pannakara said that a modest initiative had unexpectedly received worldwide recognition and demonstrated how small actions can contribute to meaningful change.

“Our purpose is simple,” he remarked. “Peace does not begin with governments; it begins with individuals. One step, one breath, and one mindful intention can help create a more peaceful world.”

Representing the Lumbini Development Trust, Acting Member Secretary Gyanin Rai stated that the arrival of Venerable Pannakara and the famous dog had added special significance to the peace walk. He noted that the visit further enhances Lumbini’s spiritual importance and has the potential to support peace tourism in the region.

According to Ven. Maitri Mahasthavir, This was not Venerable Pannakara’s first visit to Nepal. Following the devastating 2015 earthquake, he visited the country to assist affected families by providing relief support, including food supplies and housing assistance. Other members of the delegation also have previous connections with Nepal, having spent periods of monastic retreat and study in locations such as Langtang and Lumbini.

The visit highlights the enduring global appeal of Buddha’s message of peace and compassion, while reinforcing Lumbini’s role as an international center for spiritual dialogue and harmony.
